It's that time of year again. The annual Burning Judas event that takes place at noon on Easter Sunday is right around the corner. This year, 2023, it will take place on April 9, Easter Sunday. Check out our video of last years' activities.
The burning Judas takes place in San Miguel de Allende and throughout Mexico. Judas, according to the Bible, Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus right before he was crucified. This tradition involves burning, or more accurately, blowing up paper Mache dolls that depict Judas and other unsavory characters of contemporary times. We have seen Trump and several Mexican presidents public figures in the past.
These dolls are hung by rope on the main square, known here as "el Jardín", at noon on Easter Sunday. A wick is lit, and, one by one, they are blown up to the enjoyment of everyone present. This is definitely a highlight of Easter celebrations in San Miguel.

Mexico City is only a three to four hour drive, and a 4.5 hour bus ride away. We love it there and go as often as we can. On this occasion, we met up with Paco de Santiago (https://www.instagram.com/conde.petatl), food tour leader with Culinary Backstreets, to explore sites less visited and to discover secret food gems of the Centro Historico, Mexico City's historical center.
We highly recommend reserving a tour with Culinary Backstreets. (not a sponsor). We have done tours with them in Lisbon and now in Mexico City. They offer tours throughout the world. Here's their website: https://culinarybackstreets.com The band playing Huastecan folk music at the beginning of the video is available for hire in Mexico City. They can be reached on WhatsApp at +55 3111 1953. Looking for a hotel in San Miguel de Allende? Or perhaps an AirBnB is what you need. Did you know that you can do a one-day excursion from San Miguel de Allende to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries? Check out this video of our experience visiting the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.
There are many sanctuaries located approximately 3-4 hours away from San Miguel. We chose Sierra Chincua, which is approximately 3.5 hours away. This was perfect for our one-day getaway. We left Antigua Capilla boutique Bed and Breakfast at 7:30am and arrived at the monarch butterfly sanctuary at 11AM. This was the perfect time to arrive, as the butterflies do not become active until the sun hits them. The hike from the entrance to the monarchs was about half an hour. We were allowed to spend approximately half an hour at the site, and what an incredible time that was! If you are planning a stay of 4-or-more-nights in San Miguel de Allende, this trip is something you should add to your list of activities. You can rent a car and do it on your own, or, if you prefer to leave the driving to others, we can help you arrange for a private driver. You can visit the monarch butterflies from mid-November until mid- March, the months that the butterflies overwinter in Mexico. Join us as we take a day trip from our home town of San Miguel de Allende to CERRO DEL CUBILETE and the CRISTO REY. This gigantic statue of Christ is located on top of a 600-foot-tall hill, just a short 2-hour drive from San Miguel and just a few minutes from the Guanajuato Airport (GTO) and the cities of Guanajuato and Leon. After visiting the shrine, we eat some delicious Mexican street food.

However, you must do it right! Lots of ATMs do tricky things to get you to choose an exchange rate that is not in your favor.
