If you’re an avid adventurer and history buff like us, you know the thrill of uncovering hidden gems. Our latest journey took us to a place of haunting beauty and profound history near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico: a sunken chapel that has re-emerged due to recent drought conditions. The Beginning of our Adventure Our exploration began, as many do in the modern age, with a virtual journey on Google Earth. While scanning the area near a reservoir not far from San Miguel de Allende, we stumbled upon what looked like the ruins of an old structure. Curiosity piqued, we decided to embark on a real-life adventure to uncover the secrets of this intriguing site. Setting Off Jumping into our trusty old SUV, we were ready for some off-roading. With only a general idea of our destination, we navigated the highways and byways near the dam, looking for a path that would lead us to the reservoir. Along the way, we had a few delightful surprises, including a playful puppy that had stolen a teddy bear from a neighbor’s house!  As we drove through a small village near the reservoir, we couldn’t help but wonder how the lack of water this year had affected its inhabitants. The changing climate has led to decreased rainfall, leaving the reservoir nearly empty and exposing hidden treasures like the one we were about to discover. The Struggle to Find the Path Our first attempt to reach the ruins was a bust. After taking some wrong turns and talking to the locals, we had to turn back. But we were determined. With new directions and renewed resolve, we tried again, this time finding a path that led us closer to the reservoir's edge.  We Arrive! After about 15 minutes of mild off-roading, we saw it. The dramatic reveal of the sunken chapel emerging from the reservoir was a sight to behold. As we suspected, the structure was an ancient chapel that had been submerged since the construction of a dam in the 1960s. This dam was built to control flooding in downstream cities, resulting in the flooding of several villages along the Laja River.  The architecture, even in its ruined state, spoke volumes about the craftsmanship and dedication that went into its construction. Detailed stonework and the resilient steeple rising defiantly were testaments to the enduring spirit of the people who once worshipped here. It was fascinating to imagine the vibrant village that once surrounded this chapel, a focal point in the lives of its inhabitants. A Glimpse into the Past The sight of the chapel above water was a powerful reminder of how our environment can change over time, unearthing hidden treasures. This chapel, now a relic, once echoed with the voices of its community. Today, it stands silent, yet it speaks volumes to those who visit. Conclusion Our adventure to the sunken chapel of San Miguel de Allende was a journey through time, revealing a hidden gem that had been submerged for decades. It served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of progress and the enduring spirit of those who once called this place home.  We hope you enjoyed this journey with us. It's that time of year again. The annual Burning Judas event that takes place at noon on Easter Sunday is right around the corner. This year, 2023, it will take place on April 9, Easter Sunday. Check out our video of last years' activities.
The burning Judas takes place in San Miguel de Allende and throughout Mexico. Judas, according to the Bible, Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus right before he was crucified. This tradition involves burning, or more accurately, blowing up paper Mache dolls that depict Judas and other unsavory characters of contemporary times. We have seen Trump and several Mexican presidents public figures in the past.
These dolls are hung by rope on the main square, known here as "el Jardín", at noon on Easter Sunday. A wick is lit, and, one by one, they are blown up to the enjoyment of everyone present. This is definitely a highlight of Easter celebrations in San Miguel.
Mexico City is only a three to four hour drive, and a 4.5 hour bus ride away. We love it there and go as often as we can. On this occasion, we met up with Paco de Santiago (https://www.instagram.com/conde.petatl), food tour leader with Culinary Backstreets, to explore sites less visited and to discover secret food gems of the Centro Historico, Mexico City's historical center.

On a recent overnight trip from San Miguel de Allende, we visited the Sierra Gorda region of the nearby Mexican state of Queretaro. We stayed at Jalpan de Serra. We woke up very early in the morning to catch the sunrise from the Mirador Cuatro Palos. We hiked along the Escanela River to Puente de Dios. This trip has everything from colonial architecture to regional food to a bit of hiking and an incredible sunrise. Join us as we take a day trip from our home town of San Miguel de Allende to CERRO DEL CUBILETE and the CRISTO REY. This gigantic statue of Christ is located on top of a 600-foot-tall hill, just a short 2-hour drive from San Miguel and just a few minutes from the Guanajuato Airport (GTO) and the cities of Guanajuato and Leon. After visiting the shrine, we eat some delicious Mexican street food.
