Burning Judas in San Miguel de Allende Mexico

3/22/2023

It's that time of year again. The annual Burning Judas event that takes place at noon on Easter Sunday is right around the corner. This year, 2023, it will take place on April 9, Easter Sunday. Check out our video of last years' activities.
The burning Judas takes place in San Miguel de Allende and throughout Mexico. Judas, according to the Bible, Judas was the disciple that betrayed Jesus right before he was crucified. This tradition involves burning, or more accurately, blowing up paper Mache dolls that depict Judas and other unsavory characters of contemporary times. We have seen Trump and several Mexican presidents public figures in the past.

These dolls are hung by rope on the main square, known here as "el Jardín", at noon on Easter Sunday. A wick is lit, and, one by one, they are blown up to the enjoyment of everyone present.

This is definitely a highlight of Easter celebrations in San Miguel.

Hidden Food Gems Mexico City Historical Center

11/20/2022

Mexico City is only a three to four hour drive, and a 4.5 hour bus ride away. We love it there and go as often as we can. On this occasion, we met up with Paco de Santiago (https://www.instagram.com/conde.petatl), food tour leader with Culinary Backstreets, to explore sites less visited and to discover secret food gems of the Centro Historico, Mexico City's historical center.

We highly recommend reserving a tour with Culinary Backstreets. (not a sponsor). We have done tours with them in Lisbon and now in Mexico City. They offer tours throughout the world. Here's their website:
https://culinarybackstreets.com The band playing Huastecan folk music at the beginning of the video is available for hire in Mexico City. They can be reached on WhatsApp at +55 3111 1953.

Visiting the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

11/9/2022

Did you know that you can do a one-day excursion from San Miguel de Allende to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries? Check out this video of our experience visiting the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

There are many sanctuaries located approximately 3-4 hours away from San Miguel. We chose Sierra Chincua, which is approximately 3.5 hours away. This was perfect for our one-day getaway.

We left Antigua Capilla boutique Bed and Breakfast at 7:30am and arrived at the monarch butterfly sanctuary at 11AM. This was the perfect time to arrive, as the butterflies do not become active until the sun hits them. The hike from the entrance to the monarchs was about half an hour. We were allowed to spend approximately half an hour at the site, and what an incredible time that was!

If you are planning a stay of 4-or-more-nights in San Miguel de Allende, this trip is something you should add to your list of activities. You can rent a car and do it on your own, or, if you prefer to leave the driving to others, we can help you arrange for a private driver.

You can visit the monarch butterflies from mid-November until mid- March, the months that the butterflies overwinter in Mexico.

If you want to make San Miguel de Allende your home base during your trip to central Mexico and are looking for accommodations, consider staying with us! Check out our rooms here. We have a boutique bed and breakfast in San Miguel de Allende that we know you will enjoy. See you soon!

Mexico Bank ATM Scam - Don't Fall For It

7/17/2022

When visiting San Miguel de Allende from the US or most any other country, the best way to exchange money and to get pesos is by simply withdrawing them directly from your bank account at an ATM.  However, you must do it right! Lots of ATMs do tricky things to get you to choose an exchange rate that is not in your favor.

Learn how to withdraw money the right way from your personal bank account from the US or any other country in the world at an ATM in Mexico and get the best exchange rate possible. Watch the video above to see how it's done.

In Mexico, you will find ATM's pretty much anywhere, including bus terminals, airports, malls and any other place you can imaging.

In San Miguel, "el Jardin," the main square, is surrounded by banks with long queues. There is one hidden ATM in the "Transito" office directly in front of the "parroquia," the main parish, on the opposite side of the square.

Click here to see where else to find ATMs in San Miguel de Allende.
