Shopping Local in San Miguel de Allende

Images of the "Tianguis" San Miguel de Allende's Tuesday Market
San Miguel de Allende has a great outdoor market every Tuesday known locally as “el Tianguis.” Like so many markets throughout the world, this is where you experience the true essence of the local culture.

You’ll find everything at the Tianguis from fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables and all of the staples of Mexican cuisine to appliances, house wares, clothes, etc. Come explore this place and take it all in. If you’re hungry, stop by one of the many food vendors and try something local, like a huarache, a sandal shaped flat bread made from corn dough and topped with your choice of Mexican goodness. Think "Mexican pizza".

The “Tuesday Market”, as the local English speaking community calls it, is less than a mile away from our bed and breakfast in San Miguel de Allende. Walk or take a taxi...or come with us! We're there every week.

Getting From MEX Customs to the Airport Bus Terminal

About a 5 minute walk -

It is very easy to get to the Mexico City International Airport Bus Terminal from the Customs area. We’ll get to that in a second, but first you should know the following two important things:
1. You are not permitted to take your luggage cart beyond the Customs area. If you have lots of luggage, once you clear Customs you'll need to hire an official airport luggage valet (you decide on the fee/tip, but $20 to $40 Pesos depending on the load should do it.) See our “Getting around Mexico City Airport with lots of Luggage” blog, coming soon, for more information.

2. If you need to withdraw Pesos from the ATM, do it inside the Customs area. The area is secure and relatively calm compared to the rest of the airport. You'll find a couple of ATM's near the luggage carousels.

At the top of the ramp walk straight ahead (check the overhead signs) to the very end of the hall.

You’ve made it to the Primera Plus ticket counter. If you're headed to Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast in San Miguel de Allende, purchase your ticket to Queretaro. Read our “Mexico City International (MEX) to San Miguel by Bus” blog to learn what to do once you get to Queretaro. With ticket in hand, head right and down the stairs.

Once downstairs, make a U-turn. The Primera Plus busses are parked at the very end of the terminal (below the ticket counter). Now, wasn’t that easy!

Mexico City International (MEX) to San Miguel de Allende by Bus

About 4.5 hours total Airport to Antigua Capilla Bed and Breakfast

We're often asked two questions from guests regarding travel from the Mexico City Airport. The first question is “Is it safe?” and the second question is “How do we do it?” The answer to the first question is “yes.” The answer to the second question is a bit more complicated. You can rent a car and drive, you can hire a driver or you can take the bus. We prefer the bus.

Picture
The easiest way to get to our Bed and Breakfast in San Miguel de Allende from the Mexico City Airport is by Primera Plus bus to the Queretaro Central Bus Station. These are deluxe air conditioned buses with restrooms. My favorite seat is the right window seat in the front row.
Picture
They usually show a movie (Dubbed in Spanish) and offer a sandwich, soft drink and a cookie. At the time of this posting, tickets are $355.00 Pesos (about $21.00 Dollars,) and the trip takes about 3.5 hours.
Picture
Buy a ticket at the booth just outside Terminal D (see our “Getting from MEX Customs to the Airport Bus Terminal” blog coming soon) Buses to Queretaro depart every half hour starting at about 8:30 AM and continue until 9 PM.
Picture
From the Queretaro Central Bus Station, buy a prepaid taxi voucher at the taxi booth located inside the bus terminal.
Picture
Walk outside to the taxi line and present your voucher to the attendant. (Important: Be sure to have the attendant ask the driver to show you his tire changing tools and inflated spare tire.) At the time of this posting, the cost is $500.00 Pesos (about $30 Dollars,) and the trip takes about 45 minutes.
Picture
If you have a little time to kill and want to save about $350.00 Pesos, you can also catch another bus from Queretaro to San Miguel for about $40.00 Pesos. However, you might have to wait up to 2 hours before the bus leaves. It is a 2nd class bus, very “colorful” stopping at many villages along the way to San Miguel.

We look forward to seeing you at our San Miguel B&B.
